BELLEVILLE, Wis. (WKOW) -- The National Weather Service (NWS) confirms a tornado hit Belleville Wednesday night.

The NWS rated the tornado as an EF1 with max wind speeds of 110 miles per hour.

The tornado touched down at 7:10 p.m. and was on the ground for nearly 3 miles. It began west of a farm in an open field and moved east-southeast through the northern portion of Belleville, according to the NWS.

Trees were snapped and uprooted. Shingles and siding were peeled from homes. The NWS said a garage on one home fell in after its roof was lifted.

Village leaders in Belleville declared an emergency after the tornado hit. They've asked people to avoid the impacted area to allow emergency responders and village personnel the space they need to work safely and efficiently.

"To those residents who were directly impacted, please know that your community is thinking about you. Belleville has always been a place where neighbors look after one another, and we will continue to do so in the days ahead," village administrator Drew Eveland wrote on the village's Facebook page.
